The East Matukituki River Valley is a gem. A packrafting purists dream. An honest walk in takes us up to the Aspring flats which is a truely spectacular camping spot. Spare time in the afternoon can be spent exploring the rainbow and Kitchener rivers.
The next day see us hike back towards junction flat where we can begin our paddle out down the challenging but stunning East Matukituki.There are some short Grade 3 rapids in this section which are easily portaged (walked around) at river level. Whilst grade 3 might not be difficult in a regular whitewater raft, when it's your first day steering your own raft, it can be a bit beyond a novices skill level.
A rewarding day traveling back by river sees us leave the valley a short walk from our van and we'll head back home again wet, dusty but stoked.
